DFS Guaranteed Investment Funds are established by Desjardins Financial Security. Commonly known as a “segregated fund”, a guaranteed investment fund (GIF) is an investment fund created and issued exclusively by life insurance companies. It is offered through contracts which offer maturity and Death Benefit guarantees.
General Features
Transfers
- Without fees for series 5B and 5C units free of surrender charges to series 5A.
Minimum Initial Investment
Voluntary Payment Program
- $50 or more per month
- $25 or more per month for a minor
For these two cases, the minimum initial investment is not applicable if the payments are made through a pre-authorized cheque plan and the total deposits in the first twelve months amount to at least $500.

Fee-free Surrenders
Series 5B or 5C surrender charges can be waived or refunded for the following surrenders:
- up to a maximum each year of 12% of the value of the units
- for permanent and irreversible disability
Surrender charges are waived on the death of the annuitant.
No Probate Fees
At the death of the contractholder, the funds are directly paid to the designated beneficiary (except for the eligible party), avoiding the eventual delays and charges associated with executing a will. Conditions may vary from a province to another.
